Do Magazines Still Have Magic?

Global leaders in magazine publishing convene next week in London at the biennial World Magazine Conference. The 37th FIPP World Congress (International Federation of the Periodical Press) may not find the magic bullets necessary to save all publications but perhaps the congress will lead to innovation and new ideas that will help many publications survive these dramatic times.

Samir Husni, aka, Mr Magazine, interviews the organizers in his latest blog post, "Waving a Magic Wand in a Troubled Business Model" on their decision to hold the event when so many other annual events have canceled this year. Can the Stanford Publishing Course Save your Magazine?

The folks at Stanford Publishing Course were thrilled when their week-long publishing course scheduled for July 11-17, got a mention in the popular blog by Seth Godin. It sent publishing professionals scrambling to the Stanford Web site. This year's program states plainly, "Innovate or die in the old paradigm". If you want to stay in the publishing business, the application deadline is May 15.

Webbys Announce Nominees for Best Magazine Web site

The Webby Awards announced this week its nominees for this year's best magazine Web site. The candidates include Dwell, JPG, Interview, T Magazine and TheAtlantic. Vote for your favorite at the Webby People's Voice Award public voting site NOW through April 30. Winners will be announced on May 5 and honored on June 8 in New York City.

As reported in the March WIPPWired, our members are invited to apply for a limited number of seats made available for free to The International Women’s Media Foundation's Leadership Institute for Women Journalists. IWMF is now accepting applications for the 6th annual U.S. Leadership Institute for Women Journalists which will convene 20 mid-to-upper level female journalists for on-the-ground leadership training on July 20-22 in Chicago.

Funding from the McCormick Foundation is enabling the IWMF to offer this program at no cost this year. Additionally, 10 minority participants will be eligible to receive a $500 stipend to cover their travel expenses. APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY MAY 1ST. Apply for this amazing leadership training now!
