WIPP Folio BreakfastDespite a change in venue and an early Monday morning start, the 9th annual WIPP Exceptional Women in Publishing award held at FOLIO went off without a hitch. The seats filled quickly and those that arrived late had to stand for the morning celebration as women and men across all facets of publishing gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of Phyllis Hoffman, founder, CEO and president of Hoffman Media, LLC.
WIPP Board member Sheila Robinson started off the event by, for a few moments, turning it into a socializing event. "Take a minute and introduce yourself to someone you don't know at the table," she said. Robinson told the crowd that networking and meeting others was an important avenue for women to get to know each other, and help each other out in the industry.
Last years EWIPP winner, Lynn Povich, gave an introduction of Hoffman, which took some time considering Hoffman's accomplishments. Starting on her own with one magazine in 1983, Hoffman has grown her company to include 9 different titles with revenues of over 12 million. Hoffman spoke briefly about how she grew the company and some of the experiences she went through. Hoffman said she built her company, and her business philosophy on helping to enrich the lives of women. She also spoke about the launch of one of her most popular titles, Cooking with Paula Deen, and what it was like to work with a well-known celebrity.
Hoffman left a few minutes at the end to answer questions from the audience. Questions ranged from creating events for the magazine brand, such as cooking shows for Paula Deen, to next steps for young editors. After a standing ovation the 100 plus attendees went back out in the hallway, ready for the workshop hopefully a little more inspired, and with a few more friends than they had when they came. Folio Show 2007 WorkshopOn Tuesday September 25th, WIPP held a workshop at Folio Show:NY to a standing room only crowd entitled Women in Media on Media. For this talk, billed as an informal "chat," Laurel Touby, SVP and Founder of mediabistro.com and Michela O'Conner Abrams, President & Publisher of Dwell magazine, were featured. Touby, who recently sold her online media business for $23M spoke candidly about what women should do. Tips included:
- When getting investment, ask for much more than you think you need and project the highest possible revenue.
- Don't hesitate to ask for free advice when and wherever you can.
- Your best asset is your connection to your audience. mediabistro, through its fun and fabulous events and its great job listings built an online community before there was a name for online community.
Abrams spoke about what it was like to build one of the best magazines in the country. She traced her career, from a traditionally "old-boys-network"-infused company to working in the shelter industry. Some of her words of wisdom:
- Don't be afraid of an opportunity because the reputation of the company is not particularly female.
- Make your own judgments.
- It doesn't hurt to be 6'1" in heels.
Balance in life doesn't mean a 50/50 split. It means sometimes you work very hard, and sometimes you can have a break. On building a multi-media empire: The magazine no longer is the double digit revenue increase opportunity. Now it's on to events, online, prefab houses, and cable television!
