As part of our celebration, we'll be featuring various Top 10s throughout the year. Our first Top 10: WIPP's Top 10 Favorite Women's Magazines, compiled by WIPP’s board members. 1. Cosmo (1886) Cosmo magazine Why? Because Helen Gurley Brown, who took over in 1965 talks about being sexy and independent. Where else can you find 50 different ways to orgasm? Oh, yes, and how to please your man in 50 different ways.
2. MS (1971) - First appeared in 1971 as an insert in New York, and continues on to this day with NO ADS. Ms magazine
3. Jane/Sassy (1988) Originally published by an Australian feminist, Jane and Sassy (both now-defunct) combined style, feminist attitude, and fun.
4. Working Woman (1993) Now online only, Working Woman and its highly successful sister publication Working Mother are part of the events, web, and print empire.
5. Ladies Home Journal (1883) - First appeared as a women's supplement to the Tribune and Farmer.
6. O Oprah magazine (2000) Looking for a dose of spirituality with your women’s issues? Turn to Oprah, one of the most successful newsstand launches ever.
7. Bust where feminists knit, listen to music, sew their own clothes, create beautiful art, and revel in their own sexuality. WOW. There can’t be two of those, can there? Oh, wait, there’s Bitch magazine, a little less crafty, a little more political, with their tagline, a feminist look at pop culture.
8. New Moon—Recently relaunched, this is an ads-free magazine for and by girls. Check it out, and subscribe today! We are proud to report that Nancy Gruver, Publisher and Founder of New Moon is a WIPP Board Member.
9. Good Housekeeping (1885) One of the first magazines in America, Good Housekeeping with its seal of approval and other innovations, continues to be a great revenue
10. Latina (1996) This magazine is aimed at Latina women 18-45 years old, celebrating the lives and lifestyles of Latina women.
