WIPP’S 2009 WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE DRAWS TOP WOMEN IN MEDIAKeynote speaker U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier kicks off a day of vibrant panel discussions about the future of publishing in the digital age.
San Francisco, CA February 15, 2009—Approximately 120 women converged in San Francisco on January 23, 2009, for WIPP’s Women’s Leadership Conference, held at the Westin Market Street. The conference represents the largest gathering of women in media ever held on the West Coast.
The conference got off to a rousing start when Jackie Speier—U.S. Congresswoman, Jonestown survivor, and coauthor of This Is Not the Life I Ordered—gave an energizing keynote address on the power of fortitude. Sharing anecdotes of her own uphill battles won in Congress, Speier proclaimed, “If you’re not willing to fight, then all the good ideas in the world don’t mean a thing … You hold great power and an awesome responsibility. While you might not tell your readers what to think, you do teach them how to think.”
WIPP also bestowed its 2009 Exceptional Woman in Media award to Alix Kennedy, former Vice President and Editorial Director of Disney Publishing Worldwide’s FamilyFun and Wondertime. Previous recipients of this award include Gloria Steinem (founding editor of Ms. magazine), Bonnie Krueger (founding publisher of the Associated Press publications), and Eleanor Clift (author and Contributing Editor of Newsweek).
“Alix Kennedy’s speech literally brought the room to its feet,” said Linda Ruth, President of WIPP. “Her message—to ‘question orthodoxies’ and ‘maintain your authenticity’—was an empowering one to a group of women who are growing into or who have stepped into leadership status.”
Throughout the morning and afternoon, ten moderated panel discussions focused on career development and the future of media. They included “Join the VIPs of the C-Suites,” “Reinventing Publishing: Creating Online Publishing Opportunities,” and “Generations in the Media: Perspectives from the Millenials to the Post-Baby Boomers.”

The well-attended panels prompted lively question-and-answer sessions. “There was more inspiration than I usually get in a decade,” added Thea Selby, Co-Chair of the Women’s Leadership Conference. “We got a lot of positive feedback about having something on the West Coast. We’re doing it again next year in San Francisco on January 29, so everyone should mark the date.”
Throughout the afternoon, conference attendees were invited to partner up and interview one another for StoryCorps, a project to record people’s unique experiences. Kami Griffiths, founder of the Community Technology Network, coordinated the StoryCorps interviews. During the conference, about eight individuals or groups of people recorded interviews, which will be submitted to NPR for possibly airplay.
The conference was followed by a wine tasting and cocktail hour.

Co-op America Magazine PAPER Project became the Green America Better Paper ProjectOn January 1st, the Co-op America Magazine PAPER Project became the Green America Better Paper Project. In conjunction with our rebranding we launched a Better Paper Project online community to foster collaboration between magazine staff and other industry stakeholders to produce and use socially and environmentally responsible paper.
This new tool will engage magazine staff, paper mill representatives, paper merchants, printers, advertisers, designers, non-profits and eventually consumers in a collaborative effort to "green" the magazine industry. Please take a few minutes to sign up at www.BetterPaper.org and check it out for yourself. We'd appreciate your feedback on what sort of content and resources will be most useful to environmentally-minded women in periodical publishing.
If you have any questions about the Better Paper Project’s mission or what we can do for you, please visit http://betterpaper.ning.com/page/better-paper-project or contact Project Coordinator Keaty Gross at Keaty@GreenAmericaToday.org or 202.872.5364. We look forward to hearing from you!
